In 1974 I made a solo piece called New York City Winter, about my go-go dancing days. For the nine months I lived in the East Village I did that form of dancing to pay for my technique classes, and also to try to figure out how to have a relationship with an audience. You could call it an early form of immersive art-making. I learned a lot: up close, lots of conversation, and a whole lot of opinions. I began to discover that excellence might depend on context.
