2017 – American Dance Festival Award

Leah Cox asked if I would accept the American Dance Festival’s 2017 Balasaraswati/Joy Anne Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching. I thought, you never know what people are doing with the ideas and processes we share as artists, and it is amazing to realize that Leah took note.

At the award ceremony Leah went on to say:

“We need to keep Liz’s work at the forefront of our minds and in our bodies. We need to call her teaching to mind and her way of engaging people and dance. We need to recognize the ways in which we all dance, and to recognize dance as part of our everyday, lived experience. We need to take dance out of its silo and allow it to move freely in the world. We need to acknowledge that we are all, firstly, people who dance.”
